NICOLAS DONTENVILLE (1854 - 1928)
PHILOMENA KLEINPRINTZ (1863 - 1941)

PHILOMENA KLEINPRINTZ (1863 - 1941) Nicolas Dontenville, the fourth of six children of Laurent Dontenville and Elisabeth Siedenmeyer, was born in Dieffenbach-au-Val, Alsace November 26, 1854. As a young man, he likely worked in the vineyards with his father. In 1883 Nicolas married Philomena Kleinprintz of Dieffenbach. Three of their eight children were born in Dieffenbach before their departure for the United States. Joseph was born July 12, 1884; Leo, May 24, 1887 and Marie (Mary), born June 20, 1889.

In 1891, Nicolas and his young family immigrated to the United States, following his younger brother Martin, who had come to New York in 1887. The family arrived in New York City on November 1, 1891 aboard the ship La Touraine. They settled in Brooklyn. . Nicolas, who was a mason by trade in Dieffenbach became a dairy farmer on the shores of Jamaica Bay on land that is now occupied by the Downstate Medical Center of New York. Five additional children were born in Brooklyn: The first two children died at birth, Elizabeth (Lizzie) on July 13, 1895; and Katherine (Katie) on September 20, 1897. A son Lorenz Nicolas, born March 7, 1900, died at age five from diphtheria

Nicolas and his family converted from Catholicism to Seventh Day Adventist. There is a stained glass window bearing his name that exists to this day in the German Seventh Day Adventist Church, now known as the Gates Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church. Nicolas and Philomena became Naturalized Citizens on April 12, 1912.

Upon the marriage of their daughter Katherine to Charles Koppel, Nicolas and Philomena moved with them to an apartment on Myrtle Avenue in Ridgewood, Queens, New York. From there the two families moved to New Jersey. Nicolas and Philomena to a farm in Allentown and Katherine and Charles to a farm nearby in Robbinsville.

During a windstorm on the Robbinsville-Allentown Road on March 21, 1928 Nicolas was thrown from his hay wagon guided by his horse Dolly. He died as the result of the accident. Philomena died on December 2, 1941 in a hospital in Trenton, New Jersey.
