August, eldest of five children of Felix Dondeville and Margaret Schmidt, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, July 18, 1859. About 1887 he married Alice Morgan from Louisiana. Alice was born in New Orleans in May 1858. She was one of three known daughters of a Louisianan mother and a father from Massachusetts. The 1880 census records Alice living with her sister Emma and brother in law Joseph La Pierre in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

August and Alice established their home at 2206 South 10th Street in St. Louis. Their first son, William Felix, was born March 3, 1888. Clement was born in August 1890, James Max in October 1891, and Lena in October 1894. The St. Louis 1889-1890 Directories reported August's occupation as engineer. Shortly after the birth of Lena, the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. The reason for that move is not known. The 1900 census recorded August's occupation as elevator operator. The family was living at 188 Robeson Street. August died in Memphis, August 6, 1904. He was only 44 years old. Alice died November 11, 1917.
