Laurent Dontenville was born August 4, 1826 in Dieffenbach-au-Val, Alsace. He was the fifth of ten children of Jean-Vendelin Dontenville a vigneron and his wife Marie-Madelaine Lusch. Laurent was a great grandson of Jean Michel Dontenvill and Anne Marie Mour. He worked as a vigneron in the Valley's wine growing industry. In 1850 he married Marie-Elisabeth Siedenmeyer of Hirtzelbach. They established their home in Dieffenbach-au-Val.

Six children were born to the marriage of Laurent and Elisabeth. Marie Barbe was born December 4, 1850. Marie Madelaine, born December 4, 1851, purportedly married a man named Pfantzler. There is no other information on these first two daughters. A third daughter, Victoire, born in 1853, died in 1855. Nicolas, born November 25, 1854, married Philomena Kleinprintz in 1883. Marie-Anne was born August 18, 1857. The youngest child, Martin, was born in November 11, 1860. He married Marguerite Welsch in 1886. Laurent died on July 30, 1885 in Dieffenbach. The date of death of Elizabeth is not known. Their two living sons immigrated to America. Martin in 1887 and Nicolas in 1891
