Marie Ida, the third child of Josephine Dondanville and Joseph Ulrich, was born in Serena Township, LaSalle County, Illinois June 7, 1878. She was 15 when the family moved to Iowa. She married Nicholas Fred Smith. They made their home in Clare, Iowa and upon retirement moved to Fort Dodge. There were four children: Raymond; Gertrude; Earl; and Gene.
